A dinner Invitation from the Tailor

I am having clothes made while I am here. I spent an hour in the Tailor’s shop talking to him this morning. He is a sweet man, about 55 years old and grew up on the border of Thailand and Burma. He speaks four different languages but has never been to school. He lives in Bangkok when the tourist season is over. He has a wife and three children there and he misses them. He told me I am his new “American friend”.

We had an enjoyable time haggling over prices. We kept passing the calculator back and forth until we reached on a final price we could both live with. When I was leaving he told me that after he makes my clothes that he’d take me out to dinner— his treat! He offered this because we are now friends and both without dining companions. He said he doesn’t have a car but he has a scooter and said we can go wherever I like on the island!

I’m mulling over whether to go. I have another fitting tomorrow so I’ll see how it goes. If I did have dinner w him I’d have it nearby — my mother has taught me to never accept scooter rides from men I hardly know.
